Follow the road from Kalives to Almirida and on up the mountain to the pretty village of Plaka. The village has become renowned in the last few years for its excellent home cooked food in the tavernas on the square. With twisting narrow back lanes and bougainvillea abloom, views out to sea and the mountains in the background, Plaka has an air of old and new, inviting any visitor to feel at home – not a foreigner - in this time honored Cretan village. Plaka is also famous as is Kokkino Chorio – further up the mountain – as serving as the set for some of the filming of Zorba the Greek.
